Why you shouldn’t jump at Gold Delta’s increased sign-up bonus

American Express boosted its public offer on their Gold Delta SkyMiles card from 30K to 50K miles today, but it’s still not the best offer ever on this card. Importantly, they also boosted the referral bonus on the card from 5K to 10K miles, so beware of bloggers like me trying to sell you on signing up for it.

I signed up for this card in January because I received a targeted mail offer for 50K miles after $1K in spend, which is a pretty low minimum spend requirement for a bonus of that size.

Two reasons not to sign up for this offer:

  1. Today’s new offer requires $2k in minimum spend, which is $1K more than previous offers.
  2. Some people have reported being mail-targeted for a 60K-mile bonus, so this isn’t the highest possible offer for this card. Since American Express only allows you to get a card’s sign-up bonus once in your life, I wish I’d waited for the 60K offer to one day come around.

If you are badly in need of Delta SkyMiles, I would recommend the business version of the Gold card, since it is also increased to 50K miles and won’t count against your 5/24 limit with Chase (because it’s a non-Chase business card and won’t show up on your personal credit report). The day I receive an offer for 60K bonus miles on the Gold Delta business card, I’ll snap that up.
